If you’ve ever looked up at an airplane and wondered could I do that?, a discovery flight is how you find out. It’s the single best first step into aviation.
It’s a lesson, not a ride
This is the key thing to understand. A scenic “ride” straps you in as a passenger. A discovery flight puts you in command. After a short briefing, your instructor handles the takeoff, then hands you the controls in the air. You’ll climb, turn, and descend the airplane yourself.
It’s an actual first flight lesson — which is why the time counts toward your Private Pilot License if you decide to keep going.
What to expect, start to finish
- Briefing (~15 min). Your instructor walks you around the airplane, explains the controls, and tells you what you’ll do.
- Takeoff. Your instructor flies the takeoff from South Valley Regional Airport (KSVR).
- You fly. Once airborne over the Salt Lake valley, the controls are yours. Most people are surprised how natural and steady it feels.
- Landing & debrief. Your instructor lands, then answers your questions about training, cost, and next steps.
What you need (almost nothing)
- No experience. Most people on a discovery flight have never flown a small airplane.
- No medical certificate. You only need one later, before you solo.
- Just bring comfortable clothes and sunglasses. We provide the headset.
